Imagine yourself in the Bahamas in winter: the weather is pleasant; the water is warm; the sand is white; and the ocean is bluer than your dreams. Now imagine yourself sea kayaking between and camping on the islands of the Greater Exumas: paddling through paradise; sleeping on secluded beaches; swimming in crystal-clear waters.
And, finally, imagine discovering something about:
· Yourself, as you get away from the comforts and tribulations of your day-to-day life.
· Your companions, as you learn--yet again--about living in community.
· Your world, as you explore the wonders of creation and learn about its fragility and resilience in the face of
dramatic environmental changes.
· God, as you reflect on how God is working in you, in those around you, and in the world.
Now: make those imaginings a reality by joining Steve Harrington and Mark Douglas as they lead this wonderful and wondrous trip. You'll learn kayak and camp skills even if you've never done either before — this trip is for novices! Also, there will be times of reflection together about faith and the environment and how the wilderness connects with our experience of spirituality. Steve is a former Outward Bound instructor and currently works for the National Outdoor Leadership School leading kayak trips from the Bahamas to Croatia. Mark is a professor of Christian Ethics at Columbia Theological Seminary and has been facilitating these trips with Steve for a few years now.
Participants should arrive on the 13th in anticipation of launching on the 14th and returning on the 19th and flying out on the 20th. Trip cost is $1300 (airfare and pre- and post-trip lodging not included). The trip is for novices who have never done this before and should be considered moderately strenuous. Join us — participant numbers are limited! A $500 deposit secures your spot.
